An Edmonton bar that was, for years, one of the city’s only LGBTQ2S+ nightclubs is having its last dance on Saturday night – but it’s not gone for good.
Evolution Wonderlounge’s 103 Street location has been open since 2013. Although the beloved bar is closing, its owners are simply focusing their attention on their newer Jasper Avenue location, Evo, which opened in April.
“It is emotional. It’s the end of an era,” said co-owner Rob Browatzke. “But every era, when it ends, it’s just the beginning of a new one.”

‘We can’t define ourselves in basements’: Popular Edmonton gay bar moving to Jasper Avenue.
It’s the first time since 2016 basically that there’s been a two gay bar summer. The community is very very excited. Everybody has really been wanting somewhere that they can hang out in the afternoons, they can have something earlier for people that don’t wanna just go out at 11 o’clock at night.
For the first time in nearly a decade, Edmonton will have two gay bars this summer.
Evolution Wonderlounge will open a new location on Jasper Avenue and 115 Street, as its downtown location on 103 Street near 102 Avenue winds down operations.
“It forced us to start looking around so we found this space, so we’re like, let’s just do both at once until the lease runs out,” Evolution Wonderlounge co-owner Rob Browatzke told Global News.
Edmonton’s last remaining gay bar, Evolution Wonderlounge, is on the move from its current home of 12 years on 103 Street to Jasper Avenue, hoping to take advantage of the new space to expand its community.
“The other space was a dance club and show bar, and it’s been amazing for 12 years, and it was all that we could be,” said Evolution co-owner Rob Browatzke.
